A small Mayo town between the mountains and the Atlantic, and the gateway to Clare Island across Clew Bay.
Louisburgh sits at the mouth of the Bunowen River on Mayo’s west coast, with Croagh Patrick rising to the east, the Mweelrea Mountains and Sheeffry Hills to the south, and Clew Bay opening out to the north. It is a compact town, but its setting does a lot of the work, funnelling visitors out to some of the finest beaches and coastline in the county.
For a B&B in Louisburgh, the standout day trip is Clare Island: the ferry leaves from Roonagh Quay a few minutes outside town and takes just ten minutes to cross, passing views of Croagh Patrick, the scattered islands of Clew Bay and Achill in the distance. Grace O’Malley, the sixteenth century seafaring chieftain, is associated with the island’s abbey and castle.
Closer to town, Silver Strand and White Strand are regularly rated among Ireland’s best beaches, and the Blue Flag beaches at Bertra, Carramore and Old Head are all a short drive away. Westport, with its shops, restaurants and greenway, is about half an hour east.

Booking Ponderosa direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
Ponderosa holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.
No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
