Castlebar has been Mayo’s administrative and market town since the eighteenth century, and it still has that solid, well-planned feel, with the Mall, a long tree-lined green running through the centre, giving the town a natural focal point. It sits at the crossing of routes to Westport, Ballina and Roscommon, which makes it one of the more practical bases in the county if you want to see more than one corner of Mayo without constantly repacking the car.
The town itself has real depth beyond being a stopover. It was the site of the "Castlebar Races" of 1798, when a French and Irish force routed the British garrison during the Rebellion, and the Mayo Peace Park in the town centre now commemorates county residents who served in conflicts from the World Wars onward. Every July the town also hosts the Castlebar International Four Days’ Walks, one of the longest-running walking festivals in Ireland.

Set in the town centre by the old cemetery, Mayo Peace Park commemorates people from the county who served and died in the World Wars and other conflicts of the last century. It is a quiet, well-kept space and a good example of how the town holds its history close.
The Mall
Castlebar’s tree-lined Mall runs through the heart of town and has done since the 1700s, giving the place a green, orderly centre that most visitors end up walking through more than once during a stay.
Croagh Patrick and Westport
Ireland’s holy mountain and the heritage town of Westport are both around thirty minutes away, making an easy day trip for the climb, the Great Western Greenway cycle path, or simply Westport’s streetscape around the Carrowbeg River.
Knock Shrine
The Marian shrine at Knock, one of Ireland’s most visited pilgrimage sites since an apparition reported there in 1879, is around forty minutes from Castlebar and includes a basilica and museum on the site.
Achill Island
Ireland’s largest island is under an hour’s drive from Castlebar, with Keem Bay, Minaun Cliffs and Achillbeg all reachable in a day if you make an early start.
Getting to Castlebar
Castlebar sits on the N5, roughly three hours from Dublin by car and about half an hour from Westport. Irish Rail runs the Dublin Heuston to Westport line through Castlebar station, a journey of around two and a half to three hours, and Bus Éireann connects the town to Galway, Sligo and Dublin. Ireland West Airport at Knock, with regular UK and European flights, is about thirty minutes away, which makes Castlebar a workable base even without your own car for the final stretch.
