Carrickmacross grew up around a castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630, and it has been a market town for the surrounding farmland ever since, with a long main street of shopfronts and pubs running up from the old Market Square. Its best-known claim is Carrickmacross Lace, a fine needlepoint lace introduced to the town in the 1820s and later revived by the Sisters of St Louis, which has been used on garments for royalty, including on Princess Diana’s wedding dress.
The Carrickmacross Lace Gallery in Market Square keeps the craft going today and is worth a look even if lace isn’t usually your thing. Beyond the town, the ruined medieval Magheross Church and the Gothic Revival St Joseph’s Church are both close by, and Dún a Rí Forest Park and the poet Patrick Kavanagh’s home village of Inniskeen are both a short drive away.
