An estate village in south Monaghan that has grown up alongside Castle Leslie for three centuries.
Glaslough, whose name means the calm or green lake, sits about 11km northeast of Monaghan town, immediately next to the 1,000-acre Castle Leslie Estate. For the best part of 300 years, the village’s economic and social life has been bound up with the Leslie family next door, and that relationship still shapes the place today.
The Leslies arrived in Ireland from Scotland in the 16th century, and John Leslie, the so-called "fighting bishop" of Raphoe, acquired the original castle at Glaslough in 1665 using funds granted to him by Charles II. The present castle, built in Scottish baronial style in 1870 for Sir John Leslie, replaced the earlier mansion, of which Jonathan Swift, a guest there, wrote that it had "rows of books upon its shelves, written by Leslies all about themselves."
The estate found a new kind of fame in 2002, when Sir Paul McCartney married Heather Mills in St Salvator’s Church on the grounds, followed by a wedding banquet for 300 guests, and the castle now operates as a hotel and equestrian centre set around its own lake.
The village itself is small but well kept, with a handful of shopfronts and the estate wall running along its edge, and it makes an easy, unhurried stop for anyone touring south Monaghan.
