Banagher sits on the east bank of the River Shannon at one of its oldest crossing points, a strategic ford that was significant enough for the King of Connacht to build a stone bridge here around 1049. The town grew as a market and grain-export centre once the Grand Canal reached nearby Shannon Harbour in 1804, and although that trade is long gone, Banagher today is a lively little riverside town built around its marina, with a compact main street of shopfronts running down to the water.
