A small Offaly village built around the site of one of early Christian Ireland’s most important monasteries.
This Durrow is a quiet village in County Offaly, on the N52 between Kilbeggan in Westmeath and Tullamore, not to be confused with the larger heritage town of the same name further south in County Laois. Its significance is almost entirely historical: Durrow Abbey, just outside the village, was founded by St Colmcille in the mid-sixth century and became, in its time, one of the most renowned monastic schools in Ireland.
A B&B here suits travellers drawn more to quiet history than to a busy town centre. The abbey site holds an early high cross and the ruins that followed centuries of Viking raids and Norman rebuilding, and the famous illuminated Book of Durrow, created at the monastery around 650 AD, is now kept at Trinity College Dublin rather than on site, but its origin story is very much this village’s own.
Things to do near Gormagh
Durrow Abbey and High Cross
The site of the monastery founded by St Colmcille around 553 AD, with an early Christian high cross still standing among the ruins of later churches on the site.
The Book of Durrow
One of the earliest surviving fully illuminated Gospel books, created at the monastery around 650 AD and now held at Trinity College Dublin, gives this small village an outsized place in Irish manuscript history.
St Colmcille’s Well
A holy well associated with the monastery’s founder, still a point of quiet pilgrimage near the abbey site.

Booking Gormagh direct, and what the rating means
A real, assessed b&b
Gormagh holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.
No fees, no middleman
Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.
A better stay, direct
Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
