Staying in Boyle

A market town on the Boyle River between Lough Key and Lough Gara, with a Cistercian abbey in the centre of town and one of Connacht’s best forest parks on its doorstep.

Boyle grew up around its river crossing and its abbey, and the two still anchor the town today: Boyle Abbey, a well-preserved twelfth-century Cistercian monastery, sits right in the centre, while King House, a restored Georgian mansion, holds the Connaught Rangers museum and the Boyle Civic Art Collection. The town itself is compact and easy to walk, with the River Boyle running through it on its way from Lough Key to Lough Gara.

The real draw for a stay here, though, is Lough Key Forest Park just outside town, an 800-acre estate of woodland, lakeshore and island views that was once the demesne of Rockingham House. A B&B in Boyle gives you the town’s history in the evenings and the forest park by day, and the two are close enough together that a car is useful but not essential.

Boyle also sits on the main Dublin to Sligo road and rail line, so it works well either as a base for the lakelands of Roscommon and south Leitrim or as a stopover on a longer trip north or west.

Things to do near Canal View Bed & Breakfast

Lough Key Forest Park

This 800-acre park on the shore of Lough Key has walking and cycling trails, boat rental, an adventure play area and the Tree Canopy Walk, a 300-metre timber and steel walkway raised nine metres into the woodland canopy with views over the lake’s many islands.

Boyle Abbey

Founded in the twelfth century, Boyle Abbey is one of Ireland’s best-preserved Cistercian monasteries despite centuries of later use as a military garrison. Its restored gatehouse now works as a visitor centre explaining the abbey’s long and often turbulent history.

King House

This restored Georgian mansion in the town centre was built for the King family and later served as a British Army barracks. It now houses the Connaught Rangers regimental museum and the Boyle Civic Art Collection, and hosts events during the Boyle Arts Festival.

The Curlew Mountains

Rising just south of the town, the Curlew Mountains offer forest walking trails and, from the higher ground, wide views back over Lough Key and the Roscommon lakelands.

Getting to Boyle

Boyle sits on the N4 between Dublin and Sligo, around two hours from the capital by car, and Boyle railway station is on the Dublin Connolly to Sligo intercity line, roughly two and a quarter hours from Dublin. Ireland West Airport at Knock and Sligo town are both around forty minutes and half an hour away respectively, and Bus Éireann services also run through the town on the Dublin to Sligo route.

Booking Canal View Bed & Breakfast direct, and what the rating means

A real, assessed b&b

Canal View Bed & Breakfast holds a 3-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.

No fees, no middleman

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.

A better stay, direct

Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
