Staying in Carrick-On-Shannon

Ireland’s self-styled “marina capital,” a lively river town where Leitrim and Roscommon meet on the banks of the Shannon.

Carrick-on-Shannon is the county town of Leitrim, but the River Shannon splits the town in two, and the western bank, the townland of Cortober, sits in County Roscommon and is home to the town’s railway station. Either side of the river it is the same town in practice: a compact grid of streets with a strong reputation for its restaurants and pubs, built up around what is known as the marina capital of Ireland.

For a B&B on the Roscommon side, that river setting is the appeal. Carrick-on-Shannon’s marina is the busiest boating hub on the Shannon, with cruisers heading out onto Lough Ree and Lough Key, and the towpaths on both banks make for an easy evening walk regardless of which side you are staying on.
