The second-largest town in County Sligo, a long-established market town at the foot of the Ox Mountains.
Tubbercurry (Tobar an Choire) lies on the N17 about 30km south-west of Sligo town, at the foot of the Ox Mountains that form the natural border with Mayo. It has roots as a medieval market centre, with the earliest recorded mention dating to 1397, and grew through the following centuries into the trading hub for south Sligo that it remains today.
The town saw its share of turbulence too: the Black and Tans burned a large part of Tubbercurry in October 1920 in reprisal during the War of Independence. Its Gothic Revival Church of St John the Evangelist and the old courthouse, now a cultural centre, both survive from the 19th century and are worth a look on a walk around town.
