Gurteen sits at the crossroads of the R293 and R294 in south County Sligo, close to Ballymote and within easy reach of Tubbercurry and Boyle. It is a small village, but one with an outsized name in Irish traditional music: fiddler Michael Coleman, whose 1920s and 1930s recordings shaped the modern Sligo fiddle style, was born nearby at Knockgrania in the Killavil district, and a monument to him stands on the Tubbercurry to Gurteen road. The Coleman Irish Music Centre in the village itself keeps that legacy alive with music and cultural events.
The village is also close to Lough Arrow and the Carrowkeel Megalithic Cemetery, a cluster of Neolithic passage tombs on the Bricklieve Hills overlooking the lake. Carrowkeel is one of Ireland’s "big four" passage tomb cemeteries alongside Newgrange, Carrowmore and Loughcrew, and one of its cairns has a roof-box aligned to the midsummer sunset, a rare feature shared with Newgrange itself.
