Ballisodare, also spelled Ballysadare, is a small village on the Owenmore river a few kilometres south of Sligo town. The river narrows and drops over the Ballisodare Falls right in the middle of the village before spreading out into the tidal waters of Ballisodare Bay, a setting that has drawn visitors and anglers for a long time; early medieval annals already record the falls as a landmark, and tradition holds that St Columba visited the area in the sixth century.
