County Tipperary’s largest town, a lively market town on the River Suir with the Comeragh Mountains rising to its south.
Clonmel, or Cluain Meala, the "honey meadow", is County Tipperary’s largest town, an Anglo-Norman foundation chartered in the reign of Edward I and built where the River Suir runs below the Comeragh Mountains and Slievenamon. The town is best known for its stout resistance to Oliver Cromwell in 1650, when a garrison under Hugh Dubh O’Neill inflicted heavy losses on the New Model Army before negotiating an honourable surrender, and for the Main Guard, a restored 17th-century courthouse that still stands on the town’s historic core.
A B&B in Clonmel makes a good base for walking the town’s historic streets, including the West Gate, a 19th-century rebuilding of one of the medieval entry points, and for following the Suir Blueway, a network of walking and cycling trails along the riverbank. The Comeragh Mountains rise immediately to the south, with the Vee scenic drive within easy reach for anyone touring further afield.
Clonmel has a strong claim to transport history too: in 1815, local businessman Charles Bianconi started a horse-drawn coach service from Clonmel to Cahir, generally reckoned to be Ireland’s first scheduled public transport service, and Bianconi went on to serve twice as the town’s mayor.
