Cahir is a small market town wrapped around its castle, which sits on a rock island in the River Suir right in the middle of town. The town itself is compact, a few streets of shopfronts and pubs running down to the river, which makes it an easy, walkable base rather than one that needs a car to get around once you have arrived.
Staying in Cahir means the castle, the Suir Blueway walking and cycling trail along the riverbank, and the Swiss Cottage just outside town are all close at hand, and the Galtee Mountains and the Glen of Aherlow are a short drive away for anyone who wants a proper walk in the hills. Cahir Castle
Built by the Butler family from the thirteenth century, Cahir Castle is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Ireland, sitting on a rocky island in the River Suir in the centre of town. It was long thought impregnable until it fell to the Earl of Essex’s artillery in 1599, and its scale and condition have made it a popular filming location, including for Excalibur and The Tudors.
The Swiss Cottage
A short walk or drive from the town centre, the Swiss Cottage is an ornamental thatched cottage built around 1810 for the Earl of Glengall, designed by the Regency architect John Nash as a fantasy retreat for entertaining guests. It was restored in the 1980s and is now a small house museum, notable for its early Parisian wallpaper and rustic branch-work woodwork.
The Suir Blueway
A signed walking and cycling trail following the River Suir, the Blueway runs through Cahir and links it to Clonmel and other towns along the river, giving an easy, flat route for a morning or afternoon outdoors.
The Galtee Mountains and Glen of Aherlow
A short drive from Cahir, the Glen of Aherlow sits between the Galtee Mountains and the Slievenamuck hills, offering some of the best hill walking in the southeast, with the Christ the King statue at Kilross giving a well-known viewpoint over the glen.
Getting to Cahir
Cahir sits directly on the M8 motorway between Cork and Dublin, roughly an hour from Cork and just over an hour and a half from Dublin, and has its own train station on the Dublin to Cork line.
