Staying in Glasson

A rose-covered estate village on the shore of Lough Ree, a few minutes north of Athlone, said to have inspired the poet Oliver Goldsmith.

Glasson, Glasán in Irish, is a small village about 10km north of Athlone on the N55, close to the shore of Lough Ree. It was laid out to serve the Waterstown House estate, home of the Harris-Temple family, and its neat two-storey houses, once covered in climbing roses, earned it the name "the Village of the Roses" that it still carries.

A B&B here works well as a quieter alternative to staying in Athlone itself, with the lake, golf at the Glasson Hotel and Country Club, and Athlone's castle, shops and restaurants all a short drive away. Local tradition holds that Oliver Goldsmith, who grew up in the area, drew on Glasson and its surrounding countryside for "The Deserted Village" and its "loveliest village of the plain".

Booking Benown House direct, and what the rating means

A real, assessed b&b

No fees, no middleman

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.

A better stay, direct

Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
