Staying in Castlepollard

A Georgian village square in the Westmeath lakelands, in the shadow of Tullynally Castle and the legendary waters of Lough Derravaragh.

Castlepollard is built around a wide Georgian square, still lined with period buildings and marked by a sculpture recalling the legend of the Children of Lir, the four children turned into swans on nearby Lough Derravaragh. The village sits between that lake and Lough Lene, in quiet, unhurried lakeland country that has changed relatively little over the centuries.

Just outside the village, Tullynally Castle and Gardens has been the seat of the Pakenham family, later the Earls of Longford, for more than 370 years, and is the largest castle in Ireland still used as a private family home. Its Gothic Revival exterior and roughly 30 acres of gardens are open to visitors, making it the obvious anchor for a stay here, alongside the early Christian ruins at Fore Abbey a few kilometres to the east.

Things to do near Hounslow House

Tullynally Castle and Gardens

Home to the Pakenham family for over 370 years, Tullynally is the largest castle in Ireland still in use as a private family home. Its extensive gardens, close to 30 acres and first laid out in the 18th century, are open to visitors alongside the castle itself.

Lough Derravaragh

The lake associated with the legend of the Children of Lir, said to be where the four children were transformed into swans, commemorated by a sculpture on Castlepollard’s Georgian square.

Fore Abbey

A ruined Benedictine abbey a few kilometres east of Castlepollard, known locally as the Seven Wonders of Fore, and one of the more evocative early Christian sites in the midlands.

Getting to Castlepollard

Castlepollard is about 20km north of Mullingar via the N52 and R395, with Mullingar the nearest town for rail connections to Dublin. It is a straightforward base for touring the Westmeath lakelands by car.

Booking Hounslow House direct, and what the rating means

A real, assessed b&b

Hounslow House holds a 4-star b&b rating under Fáilte Ireland's National Quality Assurance Framework, assessed against the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfast and welcome rather than self-declared. It's an independent signal you can trust before you book, separate from any platform's own review score.

No fees, no middleman

Ring the owner, or use the contact details on this page, and arrange the stay with the house rather than through an app. No booking fee added to your bill and no commission taken from the owner, so the room rate you agree is the room rate you pay.

A better stay, direct

Owners answer the questions a booking platform never will: whether the room at the front is quieter, how early breakfast can be served, or where to park for a few days. Speaking to the house directly is how B&Bs in Ireland were booked for decades.
