Athlone straddles the River Shannon close to the geographic centre of Ireland, about a hundred kilometres west of Dublin on the main road and rail line to Galway. Athlone Castle, built in 1210 by the Norman lord John de Gray, stands guard over the river crossing that has made the town strategically important for centuries, and its long high street and riverside walks give it a lived-in, working-town feel rather than a purely touristy one.
