Carrig-on-Bannow, often just called Carrig or Bannow, is a small village on the sheltered waters of Bannow Bay in the far south of County Wexford. It is a quiet corner of coast today, but it carries an outsized piece of history: this bay is where the first organised Anglo-Norman force landed in Ireland, in May 1169, led by Robert FitzStephen.
There is little to see of the medieval borough of Bannow itself; it stood on Bannow Island at the mouth of the bay and disappeared under drifting sand as the harbour silted up in the 1300s. What survives nearby is Carrick, built by FitzStephen in the winter of 1169 and reckoned to be the oldest Anglo-Norman fortification anywhere in Ireland.
