A Viking-founded harbour town on Ireland’s southeast coast, its narrow medieval streets built around the Wexford Festival Opera every October.
Wexford was founded around 800 AD by Viking settlers, who named it Veisafjǫrðr, roughly "inlet of the mudflats", and the town they laid out still shapes the centre today: a long, narrow main street running parallel to the quays, with lanes and alleys breaking off it that follow the original Norse street pattern. Selskar Abbey and the old Westgate are reminders of the medieval town that grew up around the Viking settlement, and the quays along the harbour give Wexford a real working-port feel that a lot of Irish towns have lost.
For a B&B stay, Wexford works well as both a town to explore on foot and a base for the county around it. The Bull Ring, once a bull-baiting arena and the site of a memorial to the pikemen of the 1798 rebellion, and the statue of Commodore John Barry, the Wexford-born officer regarded as a father of the American navy, are both a short stroll from the harbour. Getting to Wexford
Wexford town is on the N11, about two hours from Dublin and just over an hour from Waterford. It has its own railway station on the Dublin-Rosslare line, and Rosslare Europort, with ferry links to France and Wales, is about 20 minutes away.
