A small Wicklow town on the edge of Avondale Forest Park, best known as the gateway to Charles Stewart Parnell’s birthplace and the Vale of Avoca.
Rathdrum is a modest hillside town in the Wicklow uplands, built up around its railway station on the line south from Dublin, and it owes much of its visitor interest to Avondale House and Forest Park two kilometres outside town. Avondale was the birthplace of Charles Stewart Parnell, the Home Rule leader, and the Georgian house he grew up in still stands at the centre of over five hundred acres of forest walks along the Avonmore River.

The surrounding forest park has way-marked routes from a gentle half-hour loop to a five-kilometre river walk, plus a walled garden and a café using produce grown on the estate.
Beyond the Trees treetop walk
Within the forest park, this 1.4-kilometre elevated boardwalk rises through the tree canopy to a viewing tower 38 metres up, giving panoramic views over the Wicklow Mountains, the Avonmore River and the Vale of Avoca, with Ireland’s longest slide as the quicker way back down.
The Vale of Avoca
A short drive from Rathdrum, this wooded river valley is where the Avonbeg and Avonmore rivers meet at the Meeting of the Waters, the spot celebrated in Thomas Moore’s well-known poem, and it remains a quiet, scenic stop on the way through the valley.
The old railway walk
Part of the Avondale trail network follows the disused line from Rathdrum station, passing under a historic viaduct, a good option if you want a walk that starts in the town itself rather than requiring a drive.
Getting to Rathdrum
Rathdrum railway station is on the Dublin to Rosslare line, with a journey from Dublin Connolly or Pearse of around an hour, making the town one of the easier Wicklow bases to reach without a car. By road it sits just off the N11 via Rathnew, roughly an hour south of Dublin, and Avondale itself is a flat two-kilometre walk from the village if you want to leave the car at the B&B altogether.
