Staying in Roundwood

At 238 metres above sea level, Roundwood is the highest village in Ireland, and a natural base for the lakes and hills of Wicklow.

Roundwood sits where the R755 meets the R764 and R765, on the main route from Dublin up into the Wicklow Mountains, about 50km south of the city. Its height gives it a cool, upland feel that is unusual so close to Dublin, and it sits right at the edge of some of the county’s best-known scenery.

The Vartry Reservoir, an embankment lake built in the 1860s to supply Dublin with drinking water, is close by and makes for an easy lakeside walk with good birdwatching. Further into the hills, Lough Dan and Lough Tay, the dark-watered lake known locally as the Guinness Lake, are both reachable from the village, with the looping Sally Gap drive taking in Lough Tay, Glenmacnass Waterfall and the Djouce ridge in one circuit.

The Wicklow Way passes close to Roundwood, and Glendalough, with its early medieval monastic settlement and round tower, is only about 6km south, making the village a workable base for walkers as well as drivers.

The area has its share of history too: Seán T. O’Kelly, later President of Ireland, lived at Roundwood Park, and Erskine Hamilton Childers is buried in the churchyard at Derrylossary, just outside the village.
